The anonymous poet of Gawain and the Green Knight goes through great lengths to describe the extensive detail of Gawain's armor as he embarks on his fated quest.

Most importantly is Gawain's blazon, the Pentangle, denoting his unparalleled virtue and courtly manner.

This is a great picture! It really helps see what the Pearl Poet was talking about.

I love Gawain and the Green Knight. What an epic tale. When I was reading the part where his armor was described, I thought, "He must look like Iron Man, all red and gold." You've captured it nicely.

Thanks, I'm glad you like the piece, even though it is really old. I have an updated drawing of Gawain here [link]

Did they really wear helmets like that? It's cool.

The only thing I would say it the pentangle on his back looks slightly flat. It will make something feel more rich with life-like depth if the details wrap around the forms. The one you drew would be tilted and slightly aschew right on his back if we were looking at the back of him straight on.

I see your point about the pentangle (this is what I was doing when we were talking at 4 in the morning haha)...so I kept asking myself "is it done? did I forget anything?". There's always going to be something that I can go back and touch up later, which is the glory of digital art.

And that's not a helmet, its an arming cap: to be worn under the helmet. Wearing heavy metal on your head is neither comfortable nor shock absorbing.

Fanks Lindsay as always for your sage, serious cat, advice.
